Will Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum CBD Show Up On a Drug Test?

Will Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum CBD Show Up On a Drug Test?

For athletes in all spheres of sport, regular drug testing is a reality. And with more athletes turning to CBD, the question of whether full spectrum CBD will appear on a drug test is attracting a growing amount of attention online. For those who may need to pass a test, we’ve put together this guide to full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD drug tests.

How Does Drug Testing Work?

There are several different kinds of tests that look for evidence of drugs in the body. The most common are urine, blood, hair, saliva, and sweat (charming!). These tests usually look for metabolites of certain substances that show that the substance has passed through your body within a certain timeframe, usually from hours to months.

Will Full Spectrum CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

Coaches, employers, and agencies generally test for substances of concern. In a workplace situation, these might be substances that could impair your ability to do your job. In sports, these are generally substances that could give you an unfair advantage over competitors.

Depending on your club, company, or state, the following substances are usually on the test:

  • Opioids
  • Amphetamines
  • Steroids
  • Cocaine
  • Cannabis
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Barbiturates (such as secobarbital and phenobarbital)

Will Full Spectrum CBD Make Me Fail a Drug Test?

The fact that cannabis appears on the list is where CBD enthusiasts start to get worried. Will full spectrum CBD fail a drug test? Will broad spectrum CBD fail a drug test? In reality, employers and sports organizations are generally looking for THC metabolites — not CBD. The reason is that THC is intoxicating and can impair a user’s senses and motor function. THC is also listed as a Schedule I drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

How Much THC is Too Much?

The tricky aspect of cannabis testing today is that hemp has been legal since 2018. By definition, hemp and hemp products — like the ones we sell at SOAR™ — can contain up to 0.3% THC. However, this means that you could still be suspected of consuming an illegal substance (THC) when the THC you consumed came from a fully legal product (hemp).

In states where up to 0.3% THC is allowed, drug tests will usually reflect that fact and you won’t “fail” the drug test if your levels are under that limit. However, some employers and sporting associations may have a zero-tolerance policy on THC. In that case, you could fail a drug test if you had used either full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD.

How to Enjoy Your CBD Legally

A hemp leaf held up against the sky on a sunny day

At SOAR™, we live and breathe the benefits of hemp-derived CBD. As active wellness and fitness professionals, we’ve seen the benefits first hand and want you to enjoy our full spectrum CBD without any drug testing worries. If you may need to pass a drug test, here are a few practical tips:

Know What You’re Allowed to Use

While hemp is legal at the federal level, each state and sporting association has its own rules about cannabis, CBD, and hemp.

  • CBD Only

Some states allow CBD isolate (from hemp) but don’t allow even a trace of THC. Try our Softness Sealed Lip
and Body Bettered Healing Patches in these states for the benefits of CBD without any risk of failing a drug test. Please note that we do not ship to Iowa or Idaho because they don’t allow even traces of THC.

  • 0.3% THC

Other states allow hemp-derived products with up to 0.3% THC. In these states, you can safely use our full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD before a drug test, as none of our products contain more than 0.3% THC.

  • Medical Use

In states where medical cannabis is allowed, you may be able to obtain a medical cannabis card to purchase full spectrum CBD without any drug test worries. Be sure to notify your boss or coach about your medical cannabis card to prevent any misunderstandings or problems.

  • Recreational Use

Finally, states with recreational cannabis are generally the most lenient with testing. Be sure to check with the relevant people to see whether THC will appear on the test and what the limit will be (if any).

Purchase Lab-Tested CBD

To make sure you’re following all relevant laws, any CBD product you buy needs to be third-party tested. We already know from the study conducted in 2017 that product labels are not always accurate. At SOAR™, we have our products tested at an independent third-party lab, so you always know exactly what’s in the bottle.

How Long THC Stays in Your System

Finally, it’s easier to allay your full spectrum CBD drug test worries when you know how long the metabolites stick around. While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, the following are typical processing times:

  • Hair: 90+ days
  • Blood: 1-25 days
  • Urine: 3-30+ days
  • Saliva: 2-39 days
  • Sweat: 7-28+ days

Long before a potential test, some people choose to use only CBD isolate or take a break from CBD products altogether. However, if you know the rules and communicate with your employer or coach early, using CBD isolate should not be a problem.

SOAR™ — Dedicated to Legal, Non-Intoxicating CBD Products

At SOAR™, we’re about living our best lives and pushing our physical limits. Our American-made products for
wellness, energy, recovery, and sleep contain CBD from fully legal, organic hemp with no more than 0.3% THC.
