What is CBD: CBD 101 for Newbies

Suddenly, CBD is everywhere. From gummies to lip balm, from water to coffee, CBD is taking over the wellness industry and is making an impact on the health and wellbeing of people all around the world. Everyone and their mother (and your chiropractor, esthetician, doctor, and even therapist) is touting the potential benefits of hemp-derived CBD. But what exactly is CBD and how might it impact your body?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound found primarily in the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. It is one of many powerful cannabinoids found in hemp, and it is one of the most prominent, second only to its somewhat infamous counterpart, THC. It is being studied and widely used for its potential to support the body and mind in a multitude of ways. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it will not make you feel high or impair your ability to think clearly or go about your day as you normally would.

Individuals choose to integrate CBD into their wellness routines for a variety of different reasons, including but not limited to: easing stress, encouraging healthier, more restful sleep cycles, aiding in recovery from exercise-induced inflammation, potentially relieving minor aches and pains, and inducing calm to improve focus.

The newest addition to our CBD 101 lineup is Harmony Held, our first tincture. We’ve combined 500mg of Broad Spectrum CBD with MCT oil, a popular supplement among athletes and wellness professionals with a plethora of potential benefits.

Let’s get learnin’...

Types of CBD 101

While CBD is CBD regardless of its source – natural (derived from hemp or cannabis) or synthetically-made – there are three classifications of CBD products that you can choose from: Full-Spectrum CBD, Broad-Spectrum CBD, and CBD Isolate. What defines each type is the number of naturally-occurring phytochemicals (other cannabinoids like THC and terpenes) each contains in addition to CBD.

Full-Spectrum CBD is the rawest form of CBD extraction. In addition to CBD, it retains all other phytochemicals found in the cannabis plant – including trace amounts of THC. To be legal, full-spectrum CBD must contain less than 0.3% THC.

Broad-Spectrum CBD retains all of the additional phytochemicals naturally found in the plant, but with THC removed.

CBD Isolate is CBD in its purest form. Additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant components are removed through filtration and distillation, leaving only CBD behind.

How does CBD work: CBD Science 101

An infographic explaining how CBD may work for pain.

CBD and other cannabinoids work with a network of receptors in the human body known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS), similar to the nervous and lymphatic systems. The ECS spans your entire body and regulates a wide array of bodily functions, including mood, metabolism, immune response, appetite regulation, sleep patterns, and pain – which links to several potential hemp-derived CBD benefits.

While our bodies produce molecules called endocannabinoids, hemp produces phytocannabinoids (this includes CBD); phytocannabinoids simply imitate endocannabinoids to work naturally with our ECS.

So, what’s CBD 101 all about? CBD affects the body by triggering certain receptors of the ECS within the brain and throughout the body to promote homeostasis (balance) and health. Simply put, homeostasis is the space between two extremes; that’s just right. A true happy medium. The sweet spot.

Long story short, CBD helps your body to do what it does best – only better.

Potential Benefits of CBD

CBD 101 for Potential Pain Relief

The primary question on many people’s minds is: how does CBD work for pain? Studies indicate that CBD may inhibit the body’s release of glutamate and other inflammatory agents; CBD is often touted for its neuroprotective properties and its potential to dull sensations (burning, tingling) common with neuropathic pain. An added bonus: CBD comes without many of the common side effects of over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription painkillers, including grogginess, constipation, and more.

CBD 101 for Inflammation & Recovery

For people on the move, CBD is often celebrated for its potential to accelerate and enhance recovery after working out. Unlike other anti-inflammatories, CBD does not harm the lining of your stomach or increase your risk of stroke or heart attack.

Research highlights that CBD may suppress the main contributors to inflammation, soreness, and swelling while protecting muscle cells for growth.

CBD 101 for Stress & Sleep

An important part of both recovery and rest, CBD may improve the quality of sleep. How? By working to soothe and reduce those things that keep us up at night – including stress and other external causes of irregular sleep cycles.

Studies illustrate how CBD may help to regulate cortisol, a stress hormone, which has a significant impact on non-REM sleep cycles. Additional research has discovered that after taking CBD, those who suffer from REM Sleep behavior disorder (RBD), categorized by nightmares and restlessness, may experience fewer symptoms of RBD along with no negative side effects.

And who doesn’t need more sleep? I know I could always use a few extra Zs.

Harmony Held

A woman dropping SOAR™ CBD tincture into her mouth.

While we’ve been creating CBD-rich products from the start, we’d like to introduce you to our first hemp-derived tincture: Harmony Held. Unflavored and packed with 500mg of CBD goodness, this may be our most versatile product offering yet.

Broad Spectrum CBD (cannabidiol) and MCT oil work harmoniously with your body's endocannabinoid system and may help to ease stress and pain while supporting the overall function of your mind and body.

Never used a tincture before? For best results, place one dropper (1ml) under your tongue for 30 seconds or longer, and then swallow. Start low and go slow is the name of the CBD 101 game, friends! Gradually increase the dosage, as needed, to hone (*wink wink*) in on your sweet spot. For optimal results, use daily. If you’re able to get into a routine of taking it on the same day and the same general time, you’ll be able to get the most out of your CBD and discover for yourself the potential benefits of hemp-derived CBD.

CBD 101 curious? Pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down? We’ve got a few other CBD all-stars that we know you’ll love, too. My personal favorites are our Time Taken Daily Gel Caps and our Relief Realized Healing Stick. But that’s not all – you can shop our full line of hemp-derived products here.

Does CBD cause any side effects?

CBD is typically well-tolerated and considered safe for most, although like any other supplement there is a chance of adverse (unwanted) side effects for some. According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of CBD may include dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness, or fatigue.

We strongly recommend speaking with your doctor about the medical side of CBD 101 if you have questions about side effects or drug interactions.

Wait, is this legal?

A CBD legal map of the United States.

It sure is. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp, and its derivatives like CBD, from the Controlled Substances Act, paving the way for the wholly legal cultivation, possession, sale, and distribution of the hemp plant.

While CBD is legal on the federal level, each state has the autonomy to regulate and enforce its own laws regarding CBD 101. If you’re not sure about the legality of CBD in your state, visit Leafly for the latest information.

TL;DR

Whether you’re seeing sponsored posts on social media, shopping at the co-op, or have seen billboard ads driving down the freeway, there’s no question about it — CBD is everywhere.
